A Transformational Summer Experience

Jameson Ranch Camp is a two-week, technology-free residential summer camp for children ages 6–15. Located on a 500 acre working ranch in California’s Southern Sierra Nevada, JRC allows children to spend the summer exploring the great outdoors while challenging themselves, learning new skills and creating lifelong friendships.

For over 90 years, families have chosen JRC for not just the fun activities that it provides children, but for the transformational experience that campers while on the ranch. Over two weeks, children participate in everything from daily ranch chores, outdoor adventures, campfire singalongs and more. This time creates an important and transformational sense of belonging a community, which is something alumni continue to tell us impacts their lives daily.

Why Two Weeks?

We intentionally program our sessions to last two weeks to ensure that children have the time to adjust to social, emotional and environmental changes that will allow them to thrive. We’ve found that two weeks is long enough for initial nerves and homesickness to resolve, for campers to attempt challenges for which they may not have been ready on day one, and for friendships to to form and develop into decades-long bonds.

Research in child development confirms that three generations of Jameson directors have directly observed: sustained, immersive and emotionally meaningful experiences are what reshape a child’s understanding of their own capabilities. After over 90 years of running Jameson Ranch Camp, we’ve found that two weeks is the minimum investment for this reshaping to occur.

What Growth Looks Like

Parents often ask us what changes after two weeks at camp. Here is what we consistently observe:

A child who arrived hesitant becomes more comfortable speaking up. A camper who struggled socially at the beginning of their stay finds their people. A child who avoided challenge discovers that they are, in fact, capable of achievement. A camper who doubted themselves returns home more grounded and confident in who they are.

Intentional training allows our staff to create the conditions that allow campers to thrive: a real place, a real community, real stakes, and real support. To read more about what parents say about JRC, please see our testimonials page.
